Visual inspection of gearbox housing ...

We start by inspecting the gearbox housing for external signs of physical damage.


NDT Dye Penetrant Crack Test of gearbox housing ...

This is a standard three phase Dye Penetrant test using Cleaner, Dye Penetrant and Developer to highlight any cracks in the gearbox housing that may not otherwise be visible.


Measure propeller shaft radial run-out ...

The propshaft radial run-out is measured and recorded. The run-out should be less than 0.05mm.


NDT Magnetic Particle Crack Test of propshaft ...

The propshaft is subjected to a Magnetic Particle crack test using an AC / Full-Wave DC test yoke and Magnaflux UV(A) ink.


NDT Magnetic Particle Crack Test of drive gear ...

The drive gear is subjected to a Magnetic Particle crack test using an AC / Full-Wave DC test yoke and Magnaflux UV(A) ink.


NDT Magnetic Particle Crack Test of propshaft gear ...

The propshaft gear is subjected to a Magnetic Particle crack test using an AC / Full-Wave DC test yoke and Magnaflux UV(A) ink.


Inspect rubber coupling ...

The rubber coupling / "hardy disk" that provides torsional shock absorption is inspected for deterioration.


Inspect prop shaft, taper lock bush and gear for evidence of slippage ...

The taper lock bush is cleaned and also examined for evidence of corrosion.


Re-loctite taper lock bush and re-torque ...

The taper lock bush is reloctit'd with 648 to help prevent slipping on the prop shaft and to offer some protection from fretting corrosion .


De-Magnetise any parts subjected to Magnetic Particle Testing ...

Any parts that have been subjected to a Magnetic Particle crack test are de-magnetised with a dminishing AC magnetic field. Succesfull de-magnetisation is checked with a Residual Field Strength Meter. It is very important that ferromagnetic components do not hold a magnetic field when re-assembled otherwise they will attract any swarf that may be present in the oil and cuase premature wear of gearbox components.


Replace both gearbox bearings ...

The two main gearbox bearings are not designed to handle the forces they may be subjected to in the event of a prop strike. As their reliable servicibility cannot be gaurenteed after a prop strike it is advisable to replace them.


Reassemble gearbox ...

Self-explanatory.


Refit gearbox etc ...

The gearbox is refitted along with the magneto flywheel and spark plugs etc.


Re-fit prop ...

Propeller is refitted and torqued up.


Test run engine ...

All re-assemby work is checked over, locking devices refitted and the engine test run.


Print Propeller SLT report ...

A full Propeller Shock Load Test Report is provided along with any additional recommendations.
