Overall Visual Engine Inspection ...

We start by inspecting the entire engine installation for external signs of physical damage. This includes ancilliaries such as coolant and oil radiators and their associated hoses and mounts.


Inspection of mounting points on engine ...

This is an inspection of engine mounting bolts and surrounding area of crankcase.


Inspection of engine mounts on airframe ...

This is an inspection of rubber mounts / Lord mounts and distortion or cracking of engine supporting framework.


Free Engine Rotation Check ...

The engine is rotated via prop to ensure that it rotates freely and consistently e.g. there is no unusual tightness due to impact damage, overspeeding or overheating etc. This test is performed with the spark plugs removed so freedom of movement is not affected by cylinder compression.


Remove and refit engine if necessary ...

The engine is removed if it is not possible to access the mag end of the engine due to installation considerations.


Remove propeller ...

The propeller is removed in readiness for removal of gearbox.


Remove Gearbox ...

The gearbox is completely removed to give access to PTO end of crankshaft.


Remove magneto flywheel ...

The magneto flywheel is removed to give access to MAG end of crankshaft.


Measure crankshaft PTO End Radial Run-Out ...

The crankshaft PTO end radial run-out is measured and recorded. The PTO end run-out should be less than 0.05mm. The spark plugs are removed to ensure that the test results are not affected by cylinder compression.


Measure Crankshaft MAG End Radial Run-Out ...

The crankshaft MAG end radial run-out is measured and recorded. The MAG end run-out should be less than 0.05mm. The spark plugs are removed to ensure that the test results are not affected by cylinder compression.


Check Crankshaft Phasing ...

This check is to ensure that the crankshaft has not twisted and in cylinders are still "in phase" with themselves and the flywheel position for accurate ignition timing / triggering. The maximum permitted phase difference between any two cylinders is 2°.


Ignition timimg check ...

This is done as part of the cylinder phase check above.


Visual Inspection of flywheel ...

This is a general check of the flywheel and particularly the woodruff keyway.


NDT Magnetic Particle Crack Test of Flywheel Hub ...

The Flywheel Hub is subjected to a Magnetic Particle crack test using an AC / Full-Wave DC test yoke and Magnaflux UV(A) ink.


De-Magnetise any parts subjected to Magnetic Particle testing ...

Any parts that have been subjected to a Magnetic Particle crack test are de-magnetised with a diminishing AC magnetic field. Succesfull de-magnetisation is checked with a Residual Field Strength Meter. It is very important that any oil bound ferromagnetic components do not hold a magnetic field when re-assembled otherwise they will attract any swarf that may be present in the oil and cause premature wear of gearbox components.


Refit Gearbox etc ...

The gearbox is refitted along with the magneto flywheel and spark plugs etc.


Re-fit Prop ...

Propeller is refitted and torqued up.


Test Run Engine ...

All re-assemby work is checked over, locking devices refitted and the engine test run.


Print Test Report ...

A full Propeller Shock Load Test Report is provided along with any additional recommendations.
